What Can I Do With A Major In Nursing?

Nursing is both an art and a science concerned about health and functioning as well as overall quality of life and death as defined by individual people. Nursing is an applied science which has a unique body of knowledge that utilizes principles from the physical, biological, and behavioral sciences. The central concern of nursing is the holistic person. The focus of nursing is health promotion, maintenance, curative, restorative, supportive and terminal care to individuals and groups of all ages.

The professional registered nurse plans, gives and supervises bedside nursing care; teaches nursing personnel and assists in teaching patients and their families; plans, implements, and evaluates community health services; and administers various programs inside and outside of a hospital or health care setting. Graduate nursing specialties include the nurse anesthetist who receives special training to administer anesthesia to patients undergoing surgery; the nurse midwife who practices independent management and care of normal newborns and women; the nurse practitioner who functions in an expanding nursing role, usually in the ambulatory patient care setting, working closely with physicians, and the clinical nurse specialist who works with patient groups in a specialized area, such as pediatrics, diabetes, or infectious disease control.

Upon completion of either the four year program or the two year, RN to BSN program, graduates are expected to be professionally competent generalists in nursing who recognize the need for continued personal and professional development throughout life.
