What Can I Do With A Major In Modern Languages?
The Department of Modern Languages offers a wide variety of language, culture, and literature courses that not only provide students with an aesthetic appreciation of the representative languages but also gives them a better understanding of self, of other cultures, and of the complexities of human nature.
Students pursuing a degree in one of the modern languages recognize that the world in which we live and work is global, interdependent, dynamic, and pluralistic. They study communication from the perspective that it involves cultural, linguistic, and social dimensions of language. The overall goal is to teach students to communicate beyond their native language in order to participate effectively in that world.
The ability to speak another language fluently, to understand and work within another culture, and to think critically about your world are invaluable assets in today's global world of work. Employment opportunities exist for modern language graduates in many different areas. Government, business, education, and the non-profit sector all have entry level positions for multi-skilled graduates, including those who speak another language.
