Athletic Training

What Can I Do With A Major In Athletic Training ?

Athletic Training is an Allied Healthcare Profession. Students who graduate from an accredited program can become certified through the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC). Athletic trainers specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating athletic-related illnesses and injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents.

CCSU's clinical education places a strong emphasis on providing the athletic training student with sufficient opportunities to master the desired competencies and clinical proficiencies through active participation in providing health care to student-athletes. The clinical experience is designed to provide the student with a minimum of 1200 hours of supervised practical experience with Central Connecticut State University's Varsity Sports Teams and concludes with a fifth semester off-campus affiliation. During this time, the student will be under the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer or other licensed medical professional who are trained as preceptors. Each semester-long clinical experience is designed to provide the student with ample opportunities to progressively develop competencies in the psychomotor and clinical proficiency skills that are necessary for the entry-level athletic trainer. Graduates of our program find employment at high schools, colleges, professional sports teams, clinics, hospitals, large corporations.
