Mechanical Engineering
What Can I Do With A Major In Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical engineering, one of the oldest engineering disciplines, applies the principles of physics and materials science for research, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Mechanical engineering also involves the production and manipulation of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools. Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanical engineers also design tools that other engineers need for their work. Because mechanical engineering is such a broad field, the career paths of mechanical engineers are largely determined by individual choices.
Graduates of a mechanical engineering program work on power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines, as well as power-using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, and robots used in manufacturing.
