Communication
What Can I Do With A Major In Communication?
Communication, broadly conceived, is the purposeful exchange of symbolic information.
Viewed as human behavior, communication can be examined both in terms of its process
and its outcomes and effects. The program of study defines a range of communication
problems, determines the appropriate method of inquiry, and searches for answers to
the important questions involving the role of communication in individual relationships,
in societal settings, in corporate structures, and in global interdependence. The
undergraduate major program allows for concentration in a specific area, such as Media
Studies, Public Relations/Promotions, and Organizational Communication.
Communication graduates find opportunities in a wide variety of careers in business,
education, government and the non-profit sectors. Skills in verbal and written communication
are one of the most sought after characteristics employers look for when hiring. Radio
and TV, advertising and public relations, publishing, sales, and financial services
are but a few of the many areas in which these graduates find employment. Any work
that involves communicating as its focal point is a potential career field. The communications
industry is a competitive one, and experience, via an internship, is essential.
