What Can I Do With A Major In Biochemistry?
Biochemistry is the study of the chemical composition and physical principles of living cells and organisms, their electrical and mechanical energy, and related phenomena. It deals with the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules. Other areas of biochemistry include cell metabolism, the endocrine system, the genetic code (DNA, RNA), protein synthesis, cell membrane transport, and signal transduction.
Biochemists find career opportunities in varied fields. Graduates frequently are hired by biochemical, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical, or agricultural research laboratories operated by universities, medical schools, private enterprise, nonprofit organizations, and state and federal governments.
