1. Announcements:

a. AAUP President (J. Jones)

• In the past, CCSU-AAUP has routinely donated money, when asked, to the memory of our members. Now, however, we’ll do this once per year, at the start of the academic year, and announce the names at a September senate meeting, so that their names might be recorded in the minutes.
  • This year, AAUP donated $500 to the memory of Gloria Marie Caliendo, Dona Ostrander, Peter Tolis, and Richard Williams.
• Campus Equity Week is coming; the last week of October.  CEW is a bienneial event dedicated to raising awareness of the increasing reliance on nontenured, contingent faculty on campuses around the nation.  You’ll start seeing announcements, flyers, and signage around the various events.
  • A key event will be the visit by Peter Brown, the Distinguished Service Professor of German at SUNY New Paltz, and, crucially, a founding board member of the New Faculty Majority: The National Coalition for Adjunct and Contingent Equity, NFM aims to be, if you like, a sort of MoveOn for contingent faculty, and for those concerned with

• Senator Bonvicini had no announcements today.

c. President of the Senate (C. Barrington)

• President Barrington announced the H1N1 planning meeting for Monday 10/5/09 at 4 pm in the Constitution Room. 

2. Minutes

• Senator Spector moved to approve the Minutes from the meeting of September 14, 2009. (Passed)

3. Election of Senate Committees:

• Senator Foshay, Chair of the Senate Elections Committee conducted the election by taking nominations from the floor:
  • Committee on Academic Freedom: T. Reagan, C. Button, F. Best
  • Committee on Appointments and Personnel: L. Hicks, K. Pirog, D. Sanders
  • Committee on Committees: F. Latour, W. Wang, S. Cohen
  • Constitution and By-Laws: D. Spector, D. Sims, C. Dimmick
• Senator Abadiano moved to close nominations and vote on the slate. (Passed).  The slate was elected by Senate vote.

4. Charges to Committees:

• President Barrington made to following charges to Committees:
  • Committee on Committees:
    • to continue updating the Faculty Senate Committee link on the website with meeting days and chairs of committees
    • to contact committees and request reports to the Senate
    • to continue review of committee by-laws
  • Committee on Appointments and Personnel:
    • determine status of executive, administrative hires this year and report to Senate.
  • c. Constitution and By-Laws:
    • continue to review and bring up to date

5. Reports:

*a. Academic Integrity Committee:

• J. Hedlund reviewed the highlights of the report covering the committee’s work for the  2008-2009 academic year.

b. Promotion and Tenure Committee:

• report postponed until 10/12/09.

6. Unfinished Business:

a. Faculty handbook:

• Motion by Senator Reagan to adopt revision procedures outlined in the newly revised handbook (Passed).

7. New Business:

a. Graduate Studies Committee Membership:

• Motion by Senator Mulrooney for the following exceptions to membership for an additional two year term beyond the 6 year limit established by Faculty Senate Committee guidelines:   (Passed)
  • M Bednarski, Physics and Earth Science
  • L. Zidani-Eroglu, English

b. D Designator:

• The Senate Steering Committee proposed to remove the cap on class size previously approved by the Senate on April 27, 2009.
• *President Miller disapproved Senate Bill FS.08.09.021B.
• A lengthy discussion ensued. Senator Mulrooney moved to call the question. (Failed)
• After resuming discussion, Senator Spector moved to continue discussion at the next meeting of the Senate and request that President Miller be asked to attend and address his concerns. (Passed)

c. Department Evaluation Committee Exceptions:

• Postponed until the next meeting.

d. Resolution in Support of the Student Teach-in Against Racism:

• Be it Resolved:
  
  • The Central Connecticut State University Senate supports the student-led "Teach-In" on October 14, 2009 (tentative date) that seeks to open a campus-wide discussion about racism. The daylong event will also address itself to issues of sexism, homophobia and other forms of discrimination - along with other critical student concerns.  
    
  • We endorse the students’ goals of promoting acceptance and openness on campus for all members of the CCSU community. We encourage all faculty, staff and administrators to facilitate, in whatever way possible, the success of the student Teach-In.
• Senator Hermes presented the reasons for presenting to the Senate.
• Senator Best moved to approve. (Passed).
