1.     Announcements:

       a.     AAUP: No report at this time.

b.    SUOAF-AFSCME: Senator Bonvicini announced the next meeting is October 28th at 9 am in the Constitution Room.

c.     President of the Senate: President Barrington announced the following:

·         President Miller’s office announced that a group of students have formed an Ethics Board.

·         Senate Bill 002 amending the P & T Policy has been signed by President Miller.

·         The first Campus Community Meeting with President Miller is scheduled for October 29 at 3:30 in the Nutmeg Room. Wine and cheese will accompany a question and answer session.

2.    Minutes: Senator Cohen moved the approval of the September 22, 2008 minutes. (Passed)

3.     Reports:

a. Elections Committee:

Senator Glagovich moved that the By-Laws of the Promotion and Tenure Committee be amended for this election only to allow for an exception of one (1) nominee each from both the School of Education and Professional Studies and the School of Engineering and Technology. (Passed).

Senator Cohen offered rationale for the inclusion of multiple candidates in the current version of the by-laws.

Senator Glagovich raised the timing issue that presently requires the election to be complete by the end of September. It was recommended that the Committee on Committees look at recommending a change to 4b. of the P & T By-Laws to require completion of the election process by the end of October.

          b. Academic Standards:

Senator Mulrooney reviewed the Nursing Admissions Criteria, stating that it is consistent with other programs in the area and it is estimated there will be approximately 100 pre nursing students.

Senator Spector moved to strike the language that would give priority to CCSU students into the program.  A discussion followed citing similar restrictions in the Honors program and a commitment to diversity in the admission process. (Defeated)

 Senator Iglesias moved to accept the report and recommendations of the Academic Standards Committee. (Passed)

          c.Curriculum Committee:

Senator Karpuk reviewed the Committee report and discussed the following enhancements to curriculum procedures:

·         Check with R. Brann to see if a proposed course number has been used before.

·         If a course is used in another program consult with that department

·         Address any faculty load credit issues

·         If a course is cross listed, consult with that department.

 Senator Reagan moved to accept. (Passed)

           d. UAB Minutes:

In the future, minutes will be posted to the Senate Website under the respective committee.

    4.     Unfinished Business:

Update on Peer In-Class evaluations:

Senator Cohen reviewed the development of the peer evaluation concept and suggested modifications for future consideration such as sending it to the Union for comments and reporting back to the Senate.  

 

Senator Crundwell moved to reconvene the Committee to finalize the document and send to the Union for review.(Passed)

5.     New Business:

Charges to Standing Committees:

President Barrington outlined the following:

Constitution and By-Laws

·         Review and clean up Senate Constitution and By-Laws, loose ends and contradictions.

·         Evaluate organization and function of Senate, purpose and goals.

Committee on Committees

·         Review by-laws of all Senate committees, update and post to website.

·         Look at Faculty Handbook

 

 

6.     Adjournment:  Senator Glagovich moved to adjourn at 4:25 pm.
