  1. Announcements

a.       President Craine acknowledged the guest CCSU Student Government senators He announced President Aebersold’s decision to reject the School of Business reorganization proposal. The ad-hoc committee of the Senate will not have to consider this matter any further.

Next week (October 25) candidates for the President of CCSU will be visiting campus. Open meetings will be held in Founders Hall between 1.15 pm and 2.45 pm followed by a 1/2 hour meeting with the Senate Steering Committee. President Craine asked that senators solicit faculty colleagues’ input on questions that can be raised with the candidates. Please forward them to Vice-President Abigail Adams asap.

President Craine clarified that the Committee on Appointments and Personnel of the Faculty Senate is defunct and needs to be reconsidered by the Committee on Constitution and By-laws. Hence the question of its involvement is moot. In any case, the selection of the University President does not come under its purview.

b.      Sen. Austad, also on the CCSU-AAUP Council, reported on behalf of President White of CCSU-AAUP that there would be a luncheon for faculty hosted by the AAUP on October 20 with reports from K. Beyard on the University Presidential Search Committee and Sen. C.Barington on the “Take a legislator to work” program.

There are no changes in the major, only additional electives for a Biological Sciences major and there is some cross- listing with Department of Biomolecular Sciences. Approved with 2 abstentions
Intensive English Language Program - IELP 205. Approved unanimously
Designator CHE for Consortium courses to read “CHE/Institutions’s designator”. Approved unanimously

b.      Ad-hoc Committee on Academic Integrity Report :
Chair of the Committee Sen. Antonia Moran stated that the committee would be meeting on Oct. 20. Judicial officer Chris Dukes was unable to attend the Senate meeting to provide a background on what happens when a faculty member files a misconduct report. Several senators asked questions and made comments on a variety of relevant issues. There are widely divergent views and no institutional discussion that has taken place. Disciplinary action taken depends on the student’s whole record and not just the faculty complaint. Senator Crundwell said the Committee should bring forward a report to be discussed at the Senate meeting and moved for the present discussion to be limited to 10 minutes. Motion passed with 2 opposed.

Senator Salinas favored a special hearing to consider the issues related to academic integrity if a report was not forthcoming. Senator Austad was concerned of how any institutional policy would affect our collective bargaining agreement. Senator Best opined that the Senate could not legislate to faculty, only the contract could. The ad-hoc committee should bring forward a motion before the Senate  engaged  in further discussion.

  1. Unfinished Business:
Ad-hoc Committee on Diversity of the Faculty Senate is chaired by Senator Salinas. He is asking interested faculty who wish to join the committee and work on implementing the resolution of the Senate in May 2004 regarding issues related to homophobia on campus to contact him.

  1. New Business: None

  1. Motion to adjourn at 4.05 pm - Unanimous

Respectfully submitted

Sadanand Nanjundiah
