SPRING 2019 SPECIAL ELECTION LIST OF NOMINEES AND THEIR STATEMENTS
University Planning and Budget Committee (Spring 2019 only; to be elected: 1 from SEPS, 1 AAUP at-large)
NAME | DEPARTMENT | STATEMENT |
Charles E. Button | Geography (CLASS) | I wish to serve on the UPBC. I have experience serving as a Faculty Senator and also serving on numerous CCSU committees since becoming a faculty member in 2004. Additionally, prior to joining the CCSU faculty, my non-academic career experiences include senior level positions such as Planning Director, Zoning Officer, Solid Waste Management Director, EPA Drinking Water Research Assistant, and Environmental Programs Director. I believe my academic and public career proficiencies provide me with knowledge and skills that would be beneficial to the UPBC. |
Claudia Cousins | Educational Leadership, Policy, & Instructional Technology (SEPS) | I would like to nominate myself for the University Planning and Budget Committee. I am a returning adjunct in the education department teaching EDF 215 for the semester. |
Paramita Dhar | Economics (CLASS) | I am a faculty in the Economics department. Being in the Economics department I have a good understanding of budgeting and how to efficiently allocate scarce resources. I believe I will be able to learn how the university is utilizing its scarce funds when state support is decreasing and will help to provide some ideas in doing so. |
Monique Durant | Accounting (Business) | I am in my thirteenth year at CCSU after many years in Big Four public accounting and Fortune 500 companies. As current Accounting Department chair, I participated in the recent pilot of the IBM budgeting project and believe I have the education, experience and perspective to add value on the University Planning and Budget Committee. More importantly however, I care deeply about this important effort and would be happy to serve. |
Kristina Edwards | Library | I would like to nominate myself for the Member at Large AAUP faculty member for the substitute member need for Spring 2019. I am the Acquisitions Librarian at the Burritt Library and work very closely with my library colleagues to monitor and maintain the library budget while focusing on meeting the needs of curriculum and research done here at CCSU. Given my background in acquiring materials of various formats both physical and electronic with a curricular focus as well as my experience working in academia for the past 13 years, I think that I would be a helpful addition to the UPBC as they finish the academic year and prepare for the next academic year. |
Reza Ghodsi | Engineering (SEST) | I, Reza Ghodsi, have served in this committee last fall term to fill in for somebody else. I like to continue serving. I have the experience of serving in the faculty senate as well. |
Jason Melnyk | Physical Education & Human Performance (SEPS) | I value and recognize the importance of the UPBC and would appreciate your consideration in being a member for spring 2019. My experience in the budget process relates to the department level and I would value sharing my experience as well as learning and engaging with budgetary planning as it aligns to the university strategic plan. Lastly, if elected I would keep the School of Education and Professional Studies informed and facilitate bringing SEPS concerns to this committee. |
Serafin Mendez-Mendez | Communication (CLASS) | I joined UPBC last semester. In 29 years at CCSU I had not been part of that committee but have come to understand the amazing job that it has historically done for the university. Â My contributions to the committee will be to make sure the committee makes recommendations that ascribe to: 1) Articulated Financial Processes, 2) Fiduciary Responsibility, 3) Responsible Planning and 4) Accountability. |
Barry Westcott | Chemistry & Biochemistry (SEST) | Dr. Westcott has been a member of the Chemistry & Biochemistry faculty for 22 years. During his time at CCSU, Dr. Westcott served as Chair of his department, chair of the Academic Standards Committee, Vice-President of the Faculty Senate, Coordinator of the Undergraduate Research & Creative Achievement Program, and Associate to the Dean of the School of Engineering, Science & Technology, which gives Dr. Westcott budget experience at both the department and school level. He has served on numerous other committees and has twice chaired the Connecticut-Valley Section of the American Chemical Society, a role that included budgetary responsibilities and reporting. In his own words: “When looking at budget issues I seek to address the following questions:
I recognize that some requests may only impact a limited number of students but will have a large impact on the long-term health and goals of CCSU; therefore, I take a holistic yet pragmatic approach when looking at these questions in the broader context of the stated mission and vision of our institution.” |
Jia Yeum | Mathematical Sciences (SEST) | My name is Jia Yeum, a part time faculty for mathematics department since 2016. I have learned that CCSU offers many opportunities to students throughout academic programs and activities and reaches out to surrounding communities to share its resources. I am happy to serve University Planning and Budget Committee with my 13 years of higher education experience and experiences as a treasurer of parent teacher organizations for public schools and a vice principal of a language school. |
