Current Nominees and Statements (there are currently three nominees; they are listed in alphabetical order)

Jan Bishop, Department of Physical Education and Human Performance

Senator Bishop's statement: Hello Senators, I am seeking the position of Vice President of the Senate as a faculty member who is deeply committed to service especially when that service leads toward a stronger and improved academic program, shared governance, and quality faculty and student learning conditions. This is my 3rd year serving on the Faculty Senate Steering Committee and I am Chair of the Faculty Senate Diversity Committee. I have also been Chair of the Academic Advising Committee and rejoined it again this year. In addition, I have Chaired the Committee on Committees and served as a member of the Mediation Committee. I have also been a member of the Curriculum Committee, and Chaired the General Education Sub Committee during one of the revision attempts. This provides me perspective as we look again at a revision.  I wore red on Thursdays and went to the capitol to advocate for us. My strongest qualification, I believe, is an ability to listen to multiple views and facilitate understanding between them. I have also been complimented on my ability to ask questions that help clarify issues and provide a path toward action. I am collaborative by nature and a willing leader. I respectfully ask for your vote.

Guy Crundwell, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Senator Crundwell's statement: Dr. Crundwell is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. Previously, he has served as the VP of the Senate and as VP of the CCSU-AAUP. He has served on the UPBC , on the Promotion & Tenure Committee, and on myriad other campus committees. He is strong and vocal advocate for shared governance. He staunchly believes that the powers of the faculty originate in the Senate and emanate from the Senate via its actions-- specifically through its dual charges of decision-making ([From the Senate Constitution: "in such areas as curriculum matters, degree requirements, scholastic standards, academic freedom, admission policies, and student behavior") and of advising ([From the Senate Constitution: "in the appointment of administrative officers, budget and planning matters, university organizational structure, promotion and tenure policy, and in other matters affecting the educational quality and mission of the university").

Mark Jackson, Department of Biology

Senator Jackson's statement: I accept this nomination for Vice President of the Faculty Senate, and if elected I would be honored to serve.  I have completed 5 years of continuous service on the Faculty Senate so I am familiar with senate procedures and with the issues and concerns that the Senate has faced in recent years.  Additionally, in my experience as Chair of the University Curriculum Committee, which has meetings of a similar size and a similarly complex agenda, I have demonstrated that in the unlikely event that I am called upon to step in for the Senate President, I am capable of doing so.  Â
