a. Presentation from Center for Africana Studies (E. Phillips)
b. Resolution on Campus Equity Week (K. Kean)
- Discussion focused on whether or not the Senate should approve a resolution that could be interpreted as supporting certain positions with regard to the upcoming AAUP contract negotiations. Some Senators said that the resolution could be interpreted as endorsing concepts such as part-time instructor tenure, and that the appropriate venue for discussing these concepts is a union meeting, not a Senate meeting. Other Senators disagreed and opined that the resolution is aspirational in nature, and merely states that better working conditions for part-time faculty are a good thing, leaving it to the union to decide what exactly this means.
- Motion (Blitz): To amend the resolution by:
- striking all of the current "whereas" clauses;
- moving the paragraph currently labeled as "For your information" to the beginning, and replacing the words "For your information with the word "Whereas";
- striking the clause that currently begins with "Be it further resolved"; and
- changing the "Be it finally resolved" to "Be it further resolved".
- Motion to amend failed (3 senators in favor)
- Motion (Bishop): To commit the resolution to the Steering Committee.
- Motion to commit approved (42 senators in favor, 7 opposed)
5. Adjournment
- The meeting adjourned at 4:02pm.
