Meeting called to order by President Craine at 3.05 p.m

1.     Introduction of Senators:
President Craine asked each Senator and Guest to introduce himself/herself at this first meeting of the Senate for the academic year.Â

2.     Announcements:
(AAUP) President White welcomed back all senators. She mentioned that all faculty can expect to see a raise in their paychecks as of Friday, September 16. She urged all faculty to contact her or the AAUP office on suggestions for the new contract (2007) before formal negotiations begin with the Board of Trustees. She, or one of the AAUP Council officers, would be available to come to department meetings to discuss faculty issues and concerns. She commended President Miller’s communication to everyone in the University regarding help for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and urged us to join the efforts organized on and off campus to collect donations for them. There would be a faculty social immediately following the Senate meeting today and a AAUP- “welcome back” lunch with the first chapter meeting (11.30-1.30, Memorial Hall) on October 19.

(Senate):President Craine invited Sen. Wolff to make an announcement. Sen. Wolff invited all faculty to participate in “Constitution Day” events on September 16 on campus. The events were listed on the university’s web site. President Craine addressed the Senate. His full remarks are attached.

In the 2004-05 Senate calendar, 18 bills and 6 resolutions were passed.  The bills pertained to matters related to Curriculum, DEC, Academic Standards, Degree Candidates, Graduate Studies, Meeting Dates and UPBC. The resolutions concerned Support for President-elect Miller’s defense of Prof. Ward Churchill’s Academic Freedom, Support for the adoption of Workers’ Right Code of Conduct by CCSU, Support for Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics-Earth Sciences departments desire to stay with School of Arts & Sciences, Support for the Department of Nursing’s request to the CCSU administration for the release of 2 tenure-track lines, Support for the Chemistry department’s request to President Aebersold to be allowed to change school from Arts & Sciences to Technology, and, Appreciation for President Aebersold’s services to the University.

3.     Motion to approve Minutes of Meeting of May 16, 2005 (last meeting of the Spring semester):

Sen. Westcott moved to have (New Business) Section 4.k, two sets of items 1 through 5 of the minutes submitted, relating to summarized points of deliberation for and against the resolution offered by the Chemistry Department requesting senate support for the move from the School of Arts & Sciences to the School of Technology, to be stricken from the minutes.

Sen. Sevitch raised a point of order and question of privilege regarding the minutes. He said they did not correspond to the required format of reporting as suggested in the 10th edition of Roberts Rules of Order (page 458). President Craine ruled in favor of Sen. Sevitch and stated that henceforth minutes should conform to that provision in Roberts Rules of Order. He also suggested that the reporting of minutes be considered by the Senate’s Constitution/Bylaws subcommittee.

5.     New Business:
a. Senate Elections Committee
The following were nominated and accepted: Sens. Kurkjian, Barrington, Osterreich, Rajaravivarma, Petrosino, Tower.
Sen. Abadiano moved nominations be closed.
Sen Wolff moved that the six nominated senators be accepted by acclamation.

      b.Election of Senate Secretary, 2005-06
Sen. Moran nominated Sen. Sadanand (accepted)
Sen. Benfield nominated Sen. Westcott (accepted)
The Elections Committee conducted the election by secret ballot and declared that Sen. Sadanand was elected.

President Craine requested President Miller to address the Senate before adjournment.
President Miller asked senators to consider the request from the central office for faculty and staff participation in the Advisory Committee that is to be constituted for the Chancellor Search with the coordination of AAUP and SUOAF, keeping in mind ethnic and gender diversity. He also mentioned that search committees for the positions of Provost, CFO and CIO at CCSU would be finalized very soon. He asked that all faculty and staff work cooperate with the search committee members on questions and concerns that pertain to the selection process.
