Sen. Murphy gave a background to the resolution and his request for Senate support in light of Campus Equity week (October 31-November 4) and the disparity/inequity in campuses across the U.S in the treatment of part-time faculty. He moved that the Senate adopt his resolution.
Several senators spoke of their sympathy with the needs of contingent faculty but concerned at the wording of the resolution insofar as it related to the determination of compensation of part-time faculty.
Sen. Westcott moved to amend some parts of the resolution
1. Remove the paragraph
" Whereas:
The treatment of non-tenure track and contingent faculty appointments is the barometer whereby the general status of the profession may be measured. "
2. Change the paragraph
" Be it resolved that:
Compensation for contingent (part-time) employment should be the corresponding fraction for a full time position having qualitatively similar responsibilities and qualifications. Compensation should include such essential benefits as health insurance, life insurance and retirement contributions. "
to read
" Be it resolved that:
The full time/ part time faculty ratio at CCSU should be decreased, and current part time faculty should receive resources appropriate for the service they provide."
Sen. Dowty moved that the words "economic parity and" be added in-between
"receive" and "resources" in the above paragraph.
