Minutes—December 13, 2004

The special meeting was called to order  at 1.09 pm by President Craine. It was necessitated by an oversight in not making available the Graduate Studies Committee report to senators in time for the meeting on December 6. There are resolutions in the report that need to be acted on before the beginning of the 2005 Spring semester.

 

  1. Graduate Studies Committee resolutions (Fitzgerald)

The chair of the Graduate Studies Committee explained the context to the three resolutions.

  1. Department of Art resolution requiring specific items from applicants

Wolff/Halkin – passed unanimously

  1. Department of History resolution to allow for the enrolment of students who had less than the current GPA requirement but had proven themselves to the satisfaction of the department otherwise

Wolff/Gilmore – passed unanimously

  1. Department of Criminal Justice resolution seeking additional submissions from applicants and presenting deadlines for Fall/Spring admissions

Gilmore/Murphy – passed unanimously

 

  1. Anti-sweatshop resolution (Kath Golub, student)

 

“Whereas there is a concern about CCSU apparel being manufactured in factories that do not respect worker rights and

Whereas acknowledging that worker rights are a key component of human rights and moral concern and

Whereas the CCSU Student Senate has already endorsed the adoption of the Worker Rights Consortium Code of Conduct into CCSU policies,

The CCSU Faculty Senate endorses the adoption of the Worker Rights Consortium Code of Conduct into the CCSU purchasing and selling policies and exhorts the President to take necessary steps to join the consortium.”

 

Over 130 universities nationwide have affiliated with the Worker Rights Consortium.

Senators discussed various issues related to the resolution such as - fee required to affiliate with the consortium, monitoring and enforcement difficulties of the policy, impact on the campus Barnes & Noble bookstore’s affiliation with the Fair Labor Association.

 

The amendment (bold captioned) to the resolution (Salinas/Wolff) passed unanimously.

The full resolution (Terezakis/Leake) passed with 3 abstentions.

 

  1. School of Education baccalaureate candidates for December 2004 (Sakofs)

Motion to approve the list of candidates for the BA degree from the Department of Social Work subject to satisfactory completion of all the requirements [that was omitted from the full list at the December 6 meeting]

Sakofs/Mulcahy – passed unanimously

 

  1. Motion to adjourn (1.45 pm)

 Osterreich/Crundwell – passed unanimously
