Minutes—April 18, 2005

Meeting called to order by President Craine at 3.03 p.m

 

1. Approval of Minutes of April 4, 2005

(Wolff/Dowty): passed unanimously

 

2.      Announcements: President Craine

a. Thanked Vice President Adams for presiding over the April 4 meeting

b. Thanked Sen. Murphy for circulating the report on the status of part-time faculty at CCSU especially in the context of their representation on the Senate. President Craine will appoint an ad-hoc committee to study the report and consult with the Constitution/Bylaws Committee and recommend by Fall 2005 the number of senators to be elected from the part-time faculty ranks.

c. The revised UPBC subcommittee report on Central College will be sent to all senators electronically and a resolution will be brought forward to accept the report at the May 2 meeting.                         

d. Facilities Management has met with the Art Department faculty to address issues related to the Mural Art program

e. Three representatives of the Faculty Senate and the CCSU-AAUP have been invited to meet with the Board of Trustees at a dinner meeting on April 26. Any concerns or suggestions that can be brought up with the BOT should be directed to President Craine or President White (AAUP)

 

President White (CCSU-AAUP)

a.       Met with several departments to hear concerns on working conditions. She has written her observations in the latest CCSU-AAUP newsletter. President White would welcome other departments inviting her before the end of semester.

b.      Met with a group “Reupholstering the Chairs” that is trying to deal with issues related

to specific difficulties related to the functioning of department chairs

c.       Invited all faculty to sign-up to discuss our University’s priorities, ethos and resource distribution as the new president of CCSU joins us.

d.      Local chapter election ballots have been sent in the campus mail. President White urged all faculty to vote before April 29.

4.      New Business:

 

a.       Elections – Faculty Senate Committees (Braverman, Chair)

Election results to various Senate committees were announced as attached

 

Next year’s Senate elections committee will consist of Sens. Barrington, Osterreich and Terezakis.

The Senate thanked Sen. Braverman for her work as chair of the elections committee

 

b.      University Curriculum Committee (Pudlinski, Chair)

1. Motion to approve course changes not tied to programmatic changes from

Manufacturing & Construction Management, Criminology & Criminal Justice, Educational Leadership, Physical Education, Finance, History, Internet & Multimedia Studies, Management Information Systems, Modern Languages, Nursing

 (Wolff/Fried):  passed unanimously

2. Motion to approve “minor changes” in courses from several departments, program revision and “hit list” courses, as listed below: ( Crundwell/Martin-Troy)

 

Art: passed unanimously

 

Biology: (Halkin/Fried) moved to substitute “will learn to” for “will” in Bio 170, 470

and “students’” for “student’s” in Bio 488

Passed unanimously

Original motion also passed unanimously

 

Computer Electronic & Graphics Technology: passed unanimously

                  Chemistry: passed unanimously

                  Communication: passed unanimously

                  Design: passed unanimously

                  English: passed unanimously

                  Physics & Earth Sciences: passed unanimously

                  Teacher Education: passed unanimously

                  Technology Education: passed unanimously

                  Theatre: passed unanimously

 

                  International Studies: [program revision] passed unanimously

 

                 “Hit List” courses: [ to be deleted from the catalog] passed unanimously

 

c.       Constitution/Bylaws committee ( Crundwell, Chair):

Senator Crundwell provided a summary of the changes recommended by the committee  (seen at the link above) to the Senate’s Constitution. The last revision was in 1997.

Several questions were raised, such as on part-time faculty representation, committee reports, release time for officers.

Motion to approve changes to the Constitution (Wolff/Martin-Troy): passed unanimously

The Constitution, as revised, will be circulated amongst the entire faculty for referendum.

 

Motion to postpone a discussion on Bylaws revision (Wolff/Marlor): Opposed – 9;For-5

Motion defeated

 

Senator Crundwell proceeded to provide a background and explanation of the suggested revisions to the Bylaws.
Motion to delete suggested change in Section 2.3.2 requiring State of the Senate address by the President (Sevitch/Martin-Troy); Opposed - 8; For - 17

Motion passed

The discussion on the rest of the suggested Bylaws revision was incomplete because a motion to adjourn was made. 

 

5.      Motion to adjourn –  4.50 p.m( Wolff/ Terezakis ) : passed unanimously
