The Connecticut lobbying Conference was a raging success with 27 CSU participants. Thanks to all who took part and lessons learned will be valuable in future

 

  1. Senate Committee Reports

 

a.       Academic Standards Committee. Matt Warshauer

 

Dr Warshauer, Chair of the Academic Standards Committee, presented a report to the Faculty Senate in which he explained two items that were recently passed by the committee.

 

(i) The first involved prerequisites to the Design Program. In order to gain entry into the program students must earn a “B” or better in Eng. 202 (Intermediate Composition), MIS 201 (Introduction to Management Information Systems), and a grade of “C” or better in either Math 105 (Fundamentals or Mathematics) or Math 115 (Trigonometry). Any student who receives a passing grade, though less than the requirements, may appeal to the Design Department for admission. Dr. Warshauer noted that on recommendation of the Math Department, the Design Department had changed its original requirement of a “B” in the above mentioned courses to a “C” instead.

 

(ii) The second item was the creation of a new “NR” (Not Recorded) grade that will automatically be entered by Banner should a faculty member not enter a grade for a student. The registrar has noted that this is a continuing problem. Currently, if a student does not have a grade entered, the registrar must enter an “I” (incomplete). This is problematic because the registrar is then unable to discern real incompletes entered by faculty from “false” incompletes entered because a grade has not been entered. The new “NR” designation will alleviate this problem. Dr. Warshauer also explained that the “NR” will change to an “F” at 8 weeks into the following semester, the same way that incompletes do. This was an amendment made in the Academic Standards Committee. Some committee members expressed concern that an “NR” could stand forever, and that some faculty may utilize this grade as a way to avoid entering a grade for students who were not attending classes.
