University Athletics Board Report
to Senate
on
The
Intercollegiate Athletics’ Academic and Athletic Progress
May 11, 2009
BACKGROUND AND CHARGE
In May of 2008, the
UAB presented a report to the Senate entitled “Our Division I Status,
and the Athletic Fields Renovation Project”. The report was initiated
by then Senate President Timothy Craine. President Crane requested
that the UAB address the issues of “the place of intercollegiate
athletics at CCSU in relation to our mission” and “[O]ur division one
status . . . should be reviewed in terms of its costs and benefits.”
The UAB’s report was
accepted by the Senate. The Senate subsequently moved
that the University administration develop a measurement tool in the
following four areas that "can be used to help the University community
gauge whether or not its present athletic operation and Division I
status are compatible with its goals. These areas are:
· Team APR and
overall departmental score
· Competitiveness
· Fundraising
· Public Relations
Additionally,
benchmarks and milestones would be implemented with the goal of
reviewing ICA’s [Intercollegiate Athletics’] progress on a six to seven
year basis. The UAB was charged with preparing the yearly report
to the Senate regarding these four measures in order to appropriately
prepare the Senate for an evaluative discussion of our Division I
status in another six to seven years.
In April of 2009, members of the UAB
met with the Senate Steering Committee seeking guidance as to the
appropriate information for the report. It was decided that we would
report on the Academic Progress Rate of our athletic teams, we would
discuss/suggest questions for the 2010 CIRP survey, and we would track
attendance at athletic events via swipe cards starting in the fall of
2009. In addition, we discussed, depending on resources such as use of
a M.A. Statistics student, that in the future we could possibly compare
our D-1 and D-2 data regarding class rank and compare current
admissions/enrollments/SAT/class-rank with CSUS sisters and with public
cohorts if possible.
Below is the information from the outcome of that meeting.
Team APR and Overall
Departmental Score
The
Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a real-time assessment of a team’s
academic performance. Each scholarship athlete can be awarded two
points each term they meet academic-eligibility standards and return as
a student-athlete to the institution. A team's APR is the total points
earned by the team at a given time divided by the total points
possible. (http://www.ccsu.edu/UPBC/Year07-08/athletics_APR_supp.pdf)
The Graduation Success Rate (GSR) measures graduation rates at Division
I institutions and includes students transferring into the
institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract
student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as
long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they
remained. Lastly, the GSR also allows for institutions to count first
time full time enrollees aided and entering in the spring term. (http://www.ccsu.edu/UPBC/Year07-08/athletics_APR_supp.pdf)
Attached is the UAB’s Study of Athletics which examines the progress of
our athletics programs using the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement
of Teaching classification search engine to identify comparable
universities that also have Division I athletics programs. This study
examines comparable Division I universities regarding the 2008 APR DATA,
the 2008 Graduation Success Rate (GSR) DATA, and the 2008 Six Year
Graduation Rates.
Of note is the 2008 APR Data. It includes scores from all 18 athletic
teams. Seven (7) programs were below the group average while six (6)
equaled or exceeded the group average and another five (5) equaled or
exceeded their group and NCAA average.
Competitiveness
To date, during the
2008-2009 academic year, the CCSU athletic teams have had great success.
Some of the key highlights are as follows: Women’s Soccer Wins the NEC
and competed in the NCAA tournament; Women’s Swimming Wins the NEC for
back to back seasons; Women’s Basketball had the best turnaround in the
nation and made its first WNIT appearance; Men’s Golf finished second in
the NEC; and Baseball is currently tied for first in the final two
weekends of conference play and is hoping to secure one of four playoff
spots.
On an individual
level several of our athletes received special recognition for their
efforts. Eric Hawerchuck, Men’s Golf, won the NEC tournament and will
advance to the NCAA Regional; Yan Klukowski, Men’s Soccer, is the
Glastone Award Winner for Outstanding Senior Male Athlete and Erin
Crowley, Swimming, is the Gail Rutz Winner for Outstanding female
athlete.
Fundraising and
Public Relations
No specific data is available at this time. In the 2009-2010 academic
year, the UAB will be working to develop additional data sources with
the assistance with the Department of Athletics and the Office of
Institutional Advancement.
